The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is sponsoring a new internship program for the 2024 summer. The NNSA Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) Internship Program aims to engage undergraduate and graduate students in world class research and operations opportunities within the NNSA enterprise and to increase the students’ awareness of federal career opportunities.

As a program participant, you will:
• Be part of world-class research and operations opportunities within the NNSA enterprise.
• Enhance your preparedness for scientific, technological and policy related-careers.
• Gain a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent, and skills.
• Establish connections with DOE scientists and subject matter experts that promote long-term relationships between yourself, researchers, and DOE.

Students will participate in scientific research, technical, policy, or other government relations projects that supports the NNSA mission. Available opportunities may be at DOE and NNSA national laboratories across the United States, DOE/NNSA offices in Washington, DC and site offices.

Stipend

In Person/Hybrid Summer Session
• Stipend
• Undergraduate student – $750 per week
• Graduate student – $950 per week
• Commuting Supplement – $50 per week to offset expenses associated with commuting to/from your official assigned location and to local meetings/training

The following benefits will be offered if you relocate more than 50-miles one way from your home location during the summer.
• Housing Supplement – up to the amount approved for the assigned location.
• Inbound-Outbound Travel – limited inbound/outbound transportation expenses, not to exceed $1,000, from your current address to the assigned location.

Virtual Internship Summer Session
• Stipend
• Undergraduate student – $750 per week
• Graduate student – $950 per week
• Remote participation supplement – $150 per week to offset the cost of remote participation.

Academic Term Session (Part-time Appointment)
• Stipends for part-time appointments during the academic terms will be prorated based on the expected level of effort. Students that relocated during the summer to complete the internship in person are expected to return to their academic institution after the summer term and complete the remainder of the appointment virtually. During the academic terms, no stipend supplements will be offered and travel to the hosting site will not be required.

Duration

The 2024-2025 cohort of MSIIP interns will have the option to participate in summer-only or year-long internships.
• Summer (12-weeks) internships will begin on June 3, 2024 and end on August 23, 2024. Summer interns will be expected to commit to Full Time participation based on 40 hours per week.
• Year-long (12-months) internships will begin on June 3, 2024, and end on May 23, 2025. Year-long interns will be expected to commit to Full Time participation based on 40 hours per week during the summer, and a minimum of 10 virtual hours per week during the academic year.

Eligibility
• Be at least 18 years of age by June 3, 2024.
• Be a U.S. Citizen at the time of application.
• Be enrolled at the time of application as a part-time or Full Time undergraduate or graduate student in a STEM program or other fields that supports the NNSA mission at an accredited U.S. postsecondary institutions that meet the statutory criteria for identification as Minority Serving Institutions by the Department of Education are listed at: https://orise.orau.gov/resources/stem/documents/participants/2023-msi-list.xlsx

AANAPISI – Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution

ANNH – Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institution

HBCU – Historically Black College or University

HSI – Hispanic-serving institution

NASNTI – Native American-serving nontribal institution

PBI – Predominantly Black Institution

TCU – Tribal College or University
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the Spring/Summer 2023.
